GAEM impulse TOLERVIT project

In the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol is conducting a research project called TOLERVIT which aims to create a treatment based on cell therapy to cure or at least to reduce the activity of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

During 2008 and 2009 was studied in vitro lymphocyte response of patients to the group of peptides of myelin more attacked by the disease and has launched the production of tolerogenic dendritic cells (capable of inducing tolerance) to these peptides. Tolerogenic dendritic cells are injected into the patient to stop self-injurious immune process in relation to the myelin causes the disease.

Today, we investigated for the optimization and improvement of the production of tolerogenic dendritic cells, and especially to be able to use a clinical scale in order to get approval from the "Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products" to start the trial in patients.

We have come this far thanks to the efforts of the Foundation GAEM to the invaluable collaboration of patients and family members and the tireless dedication of the science team. This effort and the support provided by different institutions such as the Blood and Tissue Bank, the Unit for Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and the Research Institute of Health Sciences Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Barcelona Science Park Foundation and The Marathon TV3 has allowed us to follow a basic research project with therapeutic possibilities that we hope will lead to the completion of a clinical trial in patients with MS in the near future.
